DEPARTMENT 4 : Solar Physics

STEREO

STEREO (the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) consists of twin spacecraft carrying identical payloads that have been launched into slightly different orbits around the Sun. Each spacecraft carries an observatory of 16 scientific instruments that will provide the first ever three-dimensional view of the solar corona and inner heliosphere, the portion of our galaxy that includes the solar system.

The solar physics team of the Solar Influences Data analysis Center (SIDC) at the Royal Observatory of Belgium, Brussels, has participated in the scientific preparation of STEREO and is currently preparing for future data exploitation.
For many years SIDC scientists have studied the physics of the solar corona and CMEs. The space weather information that STEREO will provide is of particular interest since it will be used in real-time for daily space weather forecasting performed currently at the SIDC.
SIDC is currently developing such advanced computer tools for automated processing of STEREO data.
